 Vision Statement

Introduction

Roll-a-Mole is a fast-paced, top-down re-imagining of the classic arcade game Whack-a-mole.  Roll-a-Mole sets you, the player, in the ring to square off with those pesky moles that are destroying the arena and coming to take your title belt. You can't stand for this and that's why you launch into action rebounding off the ropes to come firing straight back into the action as you try to reach a High-Score and defeat the moles.

-Whac-a-Mole, Arcade Game (1975)

Background

Whack-a-mole is a classic arcade game with physical components such as the mechanical moles that emerge from the holes and the hammer that the player uses to bash them away and gain points. This arcade machine has been taken and spun into so many differing concepts of the original but none have delved into the virtual side of gaming and truly reinvented the core mechanics of this classic video game whilst maintaining the same powerful nostalgia. Until now. With a virtual edge added to the mix, Roll-a-Mole will feature effects and mechanics to liven up the experience.

Description

The moles will try to take over the arena, entering the ring and threatening your title. However, that's when you come in! You will spring into action, bouncing off the ropes and roll hurdling towards the moles inside the ring. You can plan your attack by leaning left or right to alter your momentum and take out many foes at once. Be careful though, one wrong turn and you could land yourself into a massive bomb placed by the moles to deter you from KO'ing them in future. Hitting one of these bombs will be a devastating blow to your Ultimate Rolling Career but don't worry. If you're precise with your movements you can easily avoid these traps and defeat all Moles within the round.

It doesn't stop there though. After each round of bombs are avoided and moles are defeated a new wave of enemies will spawn, ready for your attack! Build up combos by consecutively eliminating opponents and avoiding bombs. Combos are stylish and will net you a lot of points to rack up to your High-score and impress your fans. Things might get tough and you might take a beating but don't worry you have one of the best coaches and cut-men in your corner. They will help you as you battle your way through round after round of enemies, supplying you will 1ups and if you're lucky power-ups that can be used to your advantage. Just be care you don't get to overzealous, one wrong move with a powerful power-up could mean more harm than good.

Key Features

Responsive Game Boundaries: Roll-a-Mole will keep the player engaged with its responsive game boundaries stopping the player from leaving the play area while rebounding them back into the action without hesitation or stopping.

Random Enemy and Bomb Positions: Roll-a-Mole will incorporate mechanics to randomize the location in which enemies and bombs will appear. This will make every experience new and unique to the player.

Fortuitous Power-ups: Roll-a-Mole will feature 1-ups and power-ups, provided to the player by their Corner-men. These power-ups intend to aid the player to extend play time and ambition to achieve a new high-score but may also prove unpredictable if not used correctly by the player.

Genre

Roll-a-Mole proves to be a new take on the classic 1970's arcade game. However, with technology and gaming advancing exponentially within recent years alone, we saw a chance to develop a new realization of this concept. Whack-a-Mole is a 3D game with a top-down forced perspective upon the ring, allowing the player to see every square foot of action within it. Stylized to suit a new theme we deem unique to our vision of the game, Roll-a-Mole takes place within an arena where you were scheduled for a 12 Round bout. Lucky for you though as the ring provides great advantages for you to defeat the moles.

Platform

Roll-a-Mole is developed for PC use but its style and ambiguous simplicity in regards to player User-Interface allows it to be easily applied to console and mobile devices. Roll-a-Moles design can also offer itself to a fast-paced, co-op multiplayer design which can make things a lot more chaotic and fun to play together with friends.

  1. Hey Adam, Just after reading your Vision Statement and In really like where it is going right now. I am really digging this Roll-a-Mole game you are trying to design with the bomb, power ups and boundary features. I am wondering if there will be multiple levels and will there be a timer or something. Besides all that good luck with creating this game :) -Tochi

  3. Hi Adam,
I like your twist on the classic arcade game. I like how well thought out it is and how different it is from all the other ideas I have seen so far.
I was wondering if you're going to make this game work on a computer or laptop? As we know this game involves a great eye to hand coordination. Doing it with a mouse will be challenging for some people. Or, are you going to have people using the keyboard for it?
I have one small suggestion that you might like. Seeing this is a retake on a classic game. You can plan it to have a twist to it such as, basing it on a computer virus and if you loose an animation with you computer getting hacked shows up as "Game Over".
I hope this helped in one way or another. I used the TAG technique, Denis.
